About Pedro Funes-Whittington
Pedro Funes-Whittington is an experienced viol teacher for all levels of players. He is the Assistant Orchestra Director at Woodcreek MS in Humble ISD and Director of Viols of the Creek (Woodcreek MS/Summer Creek HS Viol Ensemble). He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Double Bass Performance from the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston, where he studied with Dennis Whittaker; and a Master’s Degree in Early Music Performance from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, where he studied viola gamba and vielle with Wendy Gillespie and played the baroque bass in the IU Baroque Orchestra under Stanley Ritchie. In 2011, he co-founded the viol ensemble Les Touches, which was one of the 10 finalists in the 2015 York Young Artist International Competition.
Pedro has been the Teaching Assistant for the Beginner Viols and Teen Beginner Instructor at the Viola da Gamba Society of America’s annual Conclave and has been part of the faculty for the Summer Texas Toot. He has performed across Texas with Austin Baroque Orchestra (Principal Bass), Ars Lyrica, La Folia, Austin Troubadours and the Texas Early Music Project. Currently he is the President of Viols of Houston.
