Topic: Beyond Fantasy: the Viol Consort of Seventeenth-Century France -
How did we get from the intimate viol consort of the late Renaissance to dominance of the violin band and the virtuosic solo bass viol of the Grand Siècle? We’ll explore the reasons and the stylistic development of consort music during that period, delving into the elegant works of Henry, Moulinié, DuMont, Louis Couperin, and Charpentier. Along the way, we’ll cover topics related to performance practice not typically encountered in consort music.
